Unplugged - Night One

Tuesday night was my first Unplugged night and it went...well. Sort of.

After eating dinner (without the TV on!), I started reading. I was determined to finish the last 150 pages of my book , so I figured this would be the perfect opportunity.

Day 50

Half way through I was forced to budge. (Break #1) A very important chapter ended with a line in French. Am I supposed to know French? Of course not, so I had to go online to translate it. Very disappointing.

(The line was You have a poisoned heart, miss. If that doesn't make you want to read the book, I'm not sure what will.)

About 3/4 of the way through, I went to make tea in the kitchen. Justin was watching TV, which I promptly avoiding until (Break #2) I heard a very important line of dialogue.

Beth is sick. I don't think she's going to make it...

Strangely enough, it was the episode of Friends that I was talking about earlier that day. So weird! So I watched the last three minutes just to see them put the book in the freezer.

Around eleven p.m. I finished the book. Tears in my eyes, I stared at it for a while, remember the good parts, the bad. I like to reflect on books once I'm done reading them. I've grown so attached to the characters, I don't want to let them go quite yet. With that, I wrote the review in my real journal, which I posted on here the next day.

After finishing a book I like to look back at other past favorites. I walked by my bookshelf and gazed at them. Picking certain ones up, I flipped through the pages and smiled. It's my way of saying hello to the books. Asking how they're doing. Showing them I still care.

I did my nightly push ups and sit ups, got ready for bed, and fell asleep around 11:30p.m. It was a nice night, minus the two breaks. I really enjoyed not being bogged down by my laptop. It felt liberating, it a way.

Next week I don't plan on having any breaks. I just need to avoid reading bilingual books.

Hi Laruen,
Thanks for spreading the unplugged love...lets hope it spreads.
Funny how simple of an idea it is and yet how needed (and hard to do) for us to keep our humanity!

My name is Leif Hansen, I'm the facilitator for the 'soul tech' workshop Ariel went to and which sparked her doing the 52nights projects. BTW, if you hadn't heard, the workshop (and Ariel) was on the Today Show yesterday --you can see a clip over on the bottom page of my site at www.SparkNW.com.

Keep it up and keep sharing the story!
Warmly,
Leif

Woo! Unplugged!

I've been quite plugged, actually. It's scary that I actually have to plan in order to have an unplugged night.

That being said, I'm glad you have a better consistency than the rest of us.

And than pudding.
