Quando in Roma...

Roman Ruins

I received an e-mail yesterday asking if I would allow the photo above to be published on this website. Although it's nothing monumental, it's the 2nd time someone has used my photography on flickr and, really, that's pretty exciting! I never took photography seriously and still don't, actually; it's just a fun and creative past time I've somehow fallen into.

The pictures is of some remnants of the Ancient City in Rome, Italy. I went there two summers ago and I can't really put into words the time I had. Eye opening could describe it. Beyond amazing would work as well. I think the most accurate, however, would be inspiring.

I spent two weeks in Europe visiting my friend Katie as she took classes in Florence. With her I saw Florence, Pisa, and Paris (we took a night train to France for a few days). By myself I saw Milan, Bologna, Venice, and Rome. I've never traveled alone before and starting in a country where you only somewhat speak the language doesn't seem like the smartest way to start out. Incidentally, I found it to be the perfect way to start out. Jump in head first, eyes wide open.

Rome was actually my least favorite of the cities. Although it was historic and beautiful, it was also rude and unfriendly. Coming from the relaxing and aquatic city of Venice, Rome was a change of pace.

But away from the fast cars and pushy locals was the Ancient City. Full of buildings that Caesar himself walked through. I passionately wanted someone to scream out "Et tu, Brute?" but, alas, I was alone. I walked through the entire archaeological find in complete awe. How were things still standing? I stumbled upon a huge foot, separated from the rest of its body and gawked at how large that statue should have been. There was the Forum Romanum, Plantine Hill and Circus Maximus. All from BC and all still standing.

What do we have like that in America? Yes, our country is significantly younger, but still, what do we have that's comparable? In Orlando our sites are a giant castle constructed in the 70s and huge bank buildings. Okay, we do have history here, yes, we have the White House and the Liberty Bell. The Grand Canyons and Mount Rushmore. But how long will they last? With all of the renovations and restorations, how long will authentic architecture stay around?

While walking past Circus Maximus, I saw a small cave. Walking through it, there was some more rubble and more statues. I took some pictures and kept walking. Noticing that no one was looking, I picked up a small stone and put it in my bag. It might not have been from BC, but it was at least old. I wanted to bring a piece of history back with me, a real piece. And, hey, when in Rome...

That's a great picture. I really need to make friends with someone who is moving to Europe so I can go visit them. Or just get rich :-)

I studied in Rome in 2006 and miss it every day. Over spring break, I backpacked alone to Vienna, Paris, Cologne, Munich, Brussels, London, and Dublin. Traveling alone in a foreign country is one of the most liberating things a person can do.

But there's just something about Italy. Si, quando a Roma...

DUDE!!! You have an ancient stone? That's awesome!!! I'm totally jealous ;)

Also, you and Samir really need to take that trip to St. Augustine. Because St. Augustine is the oldest settlement in the US (I think it goes back to the 1600's or something like that? Maybe before then? It's old...) and the Castillo de San Marcos there along with the old city gates are some of the oldest standing remnants from that time. It's obviously nothing compared to Rome... but it's still pretty awesome :D

I'm impressed!

I'm no photography guru, but this makes me want to travel again.

I've also had a few pictures tagged in Flickr to appear in magazine articles and on websites. And it's always a little jarring. Because my Flickr account is full of personal snapshots. So, it's weird when someone wants something from my vacations and everyday life for something professional! Congrats to you, though!

Oooooh, congrats, that is so exciting! I've never had any of my photos used for anything other then my own memories!

Despite my time in Luxembourg and Poland, I never made it to Italy! I do want to go...Oh well, like I ever need a good excuse to go back to Europe :)

Maxie - Thanks! I say work for the rich factor. Much easier. :P

Renee - Ah! Parla Italiano? Conosco un piccolo. Non sono molto bravo a lei. Oh man, that's fantastic. I would have loved to backpack that trip you took. I'm so envious.

Colure - I'm surprised I haven't shown it to you! Remind me next time we hang out. And, yes, I want to go to St. Augustine SO badly. I haven't been since I was 13. It's about time, right? Maybe we can all go? Group trip!

So@24 - Haha-believe me, I want to travel again as well.

Nilsa - That's fantastic! I agree, though. Surrounding my pictures of Italy and photos of my puppy, my friends, etc. It's weird that people see BOTH sides of my photography. But congrats to you!

Lexiloo - Oh, I bet Luxembourg and Poland were fantastic, though. I'd love to go there.

Matt - I think i'm weird, actually, because most people love it. So there's some hope for you!

That photo is beautiful, no wonder someone wanted to use it! That picture makes me want to visit Rome, even if it's not as friendly as Venice.

Kali - Okay, I'll meet you there!

Lyla Lou - Thank you! I do suggest you go, regardless of my experience. :)

Europe= <3. Joe has never been, so I've been thinking we need to backpack Europe next summer as his graduation gift.

Holly - Thank you! Oh man, I'm so envious of his graduation gift but I definitely suggest you both do it. I love that he skipped over Europe for Asia, but is now backtracking. :)
