While driving to work today, I noticed how rough my steering wheel cover felt. Choppier than normal.
The thing is, I have a slight problem. At all times, my hands are always doing something, whether I know it or not. They always seem to be moving and I'm not sure why (thankfully, they're not possessed). They stay busy when my mind isn't. When driving it's the worst. Without knowing it, my hands pick apart the steering wheel cover, removing jagged pieces of plastic. So many pieces have been ripped off that it looks like a bear attacked. It's terrible! I didn't realize how bad it was until today.
The other weekend while watching Russell Brand On The Road (more on that later) Samir had to take away one pencil, one pen, and three markers from me because I kept taking the caps off and then putting them back on. And, of course, I only vaguely realized I was doing it (okay, one of them I did keep clicking on purpose just to annoy him.)
Most of the time it doesn't bother me, but sometimes, it's just ridiculous.
One day in class, it struck. I was sitting in one of my grad school classes, Educational Theories, listening to a very boring lecture on Rosenblatt's amazingly inconsequential theories. We had just finished a project and some art supplies were left abandoned on the table the six other students in my class and I sat around. While trying to remember the difference between cognitivism and constructivism, I started to day dream. I snapped out of it when I noticed the one boy in my class looking down at my hands. After giving him an inquisitive look, I looked down as well and noticed that in my right hand was a pair of scissors. Instead of just holding them, I was opening and closing them over and over again. I was cutting the air.
Feeling incredibly embarrassed, I quickly, yet quietly, placed the scissors back on the table and folded my hands in my lap. As class went on, so did my day dreams. As the teacher turned her back to pick up a book, I looked down at my hands. And yet, there they weren't. Instead, one was gently placed on the table, reaching over...for the scissors.
I sat on my hands after that. I'm pretty sure the other students thought I was insane.

::laughs:: hahaha I have the same problem ;)
The last 2 steering wheel covers I've had, I have destroyed by picking and peeling pieces off of the plastic without even realizing it. Luckily, the new one I have is very streamlined and thus very difficult to pick at and destroy :D
I'll tear pieces of paper to shreds (grocery shopping lists are the WORST because I carry them with me the whole time in the store!) and definitely have a pen cap issue ;)
If I were you, I'd hide the scissors though! hehe
How the hell do you get this to stop? I am CONSTANTLY messing with things. I used to play the drums so when i am not destroying property or clicking pens I am tapping a beat just loud enough to instigate murder from others.
Is there a help group for this?
Hah! Cutting the air. You are precious. Maybe you should take up knitting? Do something constructive with your tic?
I was doing that with a highlighter the other day... taking the lid on and off I mean.
And Idle Hands is a fabulous film.
Idle hands are the devil's playpen! LOL I remember that quote from the movie Idle hands.
At least you have some interesting stories about your hands. I can't say mine are as mischievous.
Colure - shopping lists ARE the worst. UGH.
Narm - I tried drums too! Nothing works, I tell you! I'm starting a help group. You can be it's first member. We can fight this illness together.
Mermanda - Ohhh, knitting. I tried cross stitching, but gave up. I always wanted to learn how to knit though. Does that make me old?
bevchen - It's so addictive! And it's a very fun film!
Miss Caught Up - Hmmm...does that mean the devil is in my hands? Oh boy...
Idle Hands was great movie. A hand wreaking havoc on everyone?
Brilliance personified.
Education classes are the WORST. If it were me with the scissors in my hand, I'd probably wind up stabbing an eye out due to peer boredom/frustration. I don't blame your crazy hands...
I fidget too. My hands are never still. Worse, I always chew on something. Like a little piece of plastic or pens or whatever. It's annoying! So if you figure it out, let me know!
you owe me three highlighters and a couple of pencils, jerk.
rs27 - It WAS pretty awesome!
Herding Cats - Aren't they? They're SO BORING!
sleepyjane - Oh I have that problem too!
Samir - Well, what's mine is yours. So, um, congrats with your new pens, you also own Hairspray!
