A contest and a review

Recently Heidi from Life in Pink hosted a contest where one reader could win a free book of their choice. Well guess what? I won! I'm ridiculously excited about this and thrilled to read my new book, Paint it Black by Janet Fitch. (If you haven't read her first novel, White Oleander, please do so right now. It's very sad, but very powerful.)

Since this week is Thanksgiving, I've decided to host the same contest as a big thank you to my readers! To enter, comment on this entry with one book you'd like to receive (under $12) by Wednesday at midnight. One reader will be chosen at random and I'll ship them their brand new book. And don't worry, if you don't win, I'll be hosting this contest again before Christmas. I'm a big fan of all contests that promote literacy.

On the note of books, yes I did see Twilight this past weekend (Friday night, to be exact). Six friends and I (two guys in the mix!) braved a 10:15 p.m. showing and were, naturally, enveloped by screaming teenagers.

Surroundings aside, I actually enjoyed the film! Yes, the effects were cheesy (especially the, as Ben described it, "Glinda the Good Witch sound effects") and some moments made me laugh out loud, but overall I thought it was a decent and fun adaptation. The actors did a great job portraying the characters. The scenery was beautiful. The plot, although deviating from the book a bit, was enticing. They left in key moments and took out unnecessary ones (plus five for no mention of how dazzling his scent is). I especially loved the moment when, while being chased by James, Bella and Edward drive past her friends exiting the restaurant. It was terribly poignant, showing how her decision to leave reason behind and love a vampire has thwarted her ability to have a normal high school life. Interesting! And the ending cameo at the prom? Brilliant.

Overall, it was an incredibly engrossing and entertaining film. It was no Schindler's List, but with good reason. I'd definitely go see it again. Now if I could only convince Samir to take me...

You definitely pulled out two of my favourite moments too. That's what made it so tough - in all fairness they did a lot of things very, very well. It's just that they botched some of the big ones! I think the next movies will be better now that they'll work out the kinks and have more dollars to play with.

Good luck with that!
I already know everything that happens! Something about zombies, right?

You need to go see it again - I had to take Kristin to go see it on Saturday (so I'm up to 2 now!) and it's actually WAY better the 2nd time around. I enjoyed it much more.

Also, yay for entering your contest! :D hehehe.

I do most of my yearly reading over the holidays (since that's when I have the most downtime), so I'd love to enter this contest! I'd like to read Elizabeth Gilbert's "Pilgrims." Thanks for running such a great idea of a giveaway!

Great contest idea! I really want to read Curtis Sittenfeld's second book, The Man of My Dreams. Her first book was such a wonderful read!

I am almost done with Twilight and haven't seen the movie yet, so it is killing me to hear everyone talking about it! (But I just HAD to finish the book first) Can't wait to see Edward "dazzle" Bella on the big screen though.

Oooh a contest, fun! A book that has been on my list for a while is Driving Sideways by Jess Riley.

A blogger recently wrote about how much she loved "The History of Love." I forget which blog I read this on, but she actually hugged the book. Any book worth hugging is a book I need to read.

Great idea, Lauren!

It's going to be weird when I say I want Superfudge, right?

Ok, Superfudge. That's Judy Bloom. She rocks.

I really enjoyed Paint in Black (well, as much as one can enjoy a really depressing story.)

I have been wanting to read Through Black Spruce.

My comment got eaten.

Congratulations on winning.

I am supposed to take my girlfriend to see Twilight this weekend. She has mixed sentiments regarding the series. She likes it but she feels the heroine is a little to Jane Austen, with no identity of her own and just waiting for a man.

I would like to read The Way of All Flesh by Samuel Butler.

Oh I *HEART* this so much!! I just might have to do the same thing...

I want to read "Paris to the Moon" by Adam Gopnik

:)

Hi there!

If I were to win this thing, I'd like to read anything by Chuck Klosterman. That's right, anything. I've heard good things, but haven't been able to check him out. Whatever's in your price range would work for me.

Your review of Twilight makes me smile. You're pretty dead on. And I'm really happy they didn't mention hundreds of times about his beauty. That was a relief.
