At the moment, I'm convinced that every blog has at least one post on The Twilight Series. At least one post on how dazzling Edward is, or how addictive the series is. Since I read the books a good nine months ago (with the exception of the fourth installment), I feel slightly out of the loop. So I've decided to participate.Quite simply, the books were addictive. Very addictive.
I read the first book, Twlight back in February (review here) and fell in love. It was recommended to me by Megan and I promptly recommended it to all of my friends. Like many before me, I too adored Edward and wanted to be Bella. Actually, I retract that. I wanted to be Alice - I favor her character much more. She's more interesting. Around then I cut my hair short and modeled it after an early production photo of the girl playing Alice. The girls at the salon had no clue what movie I was talking about.
I read New Moon literally two days later (review here). I stayed up until 3 a.m. to finish the first book, yes, I was that addicted. Since I wasn't completely pleased with the ending, I had to start on the second book immediately. At first, I didn't enjoy it as much. It was hard for me to read it, having gone through a break up recently. I compared myself way too much to Bella. Also, Edward was gone and some kid named Jacob appeared. I didn't care about Jacob, I wanted to be dazzled. But still, the ending was terribly addictive. And even though Bella was, well, annoying, I was pleased. I was also upset that I didn't visit Volterra while in Italy. (Upon reading it a second time, I thought it was much better.)
Eclipse came next (review!); it was fast paced and covered quite a bit. I really enjoyed it. I loved the climatic scene and the romance element was incredibly swoon worthy. By this time my friends started reading the books and catching on. As they became more attached, I reveled in what I started. I read the extra scenes and information (but not Midnight Sun because, really, I didn't want to read 500 pages online). I wrote a fake essay inspired by A New Dawn, entitled "Why Stephanie Meyer Sets Unreal Expectations When it Comes to Love; Or, Why Isn't My Boyfriend Edward Cullen?" I researched the film. And then, slowly, I lost interest...
...until Breaking Dawn so many months later (last review!) The book came out while I was at a wedding in Atlanta, so I wasn't able to get it until driving home that Sunday. Obviously, I stopped in the middle of the eight hour drive. I didn't want to get home without my characters. What intrigued me most about this book was how it played out. Jokingly, before it was published, I made a ridiculous prediction on what might happened. It. All. Happened. I called my friend Katie half way through and proceeded to laugh and laugh for hours. Admittedly, I didn't enjoy the parts where Jacob narrated. I thought they were out of place and mostly boring. But I did love the last section. It might not have been a perfect book, but it had my characters and that made me happy.
Once reading that I, again, lost interest. And now the movie is coming out.
I know it's shocking, but I'm only somewhat excited about the movie. Judging by previews, it only looks...okay. Sure, some scenes look interesting and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but really, it looks overdone. Of course I'll still see it opening night with my friends, still swoon and reminisce about the scenes, but I think, like most times, I'll favor the books. It looks overworked.
Megan recently started the Southern Vampire Mysteries (in which the HBO show Tru Blood is based on) and we've made some miraculous discoveries. These books were published years before Twilight and hold some very interesting comparisons. Vampire boy loves human girl. Human girl has a best friend/lover who is a werewolf. She has a non-human ability. Vampire boy is dazzling. We like pointing out the similarities.
Nowadays I don't talk about Edward and Bella often. Like an ex-boyfriend he's still around though. Megan and I will bring him up randomly, mostly in comparison. When Jeff and Hunter leave their dishes in the sink, we'll mockingly taunt them.
"Edward would never leave dirty dishes in the sink. He always cleans up after himself. And he makes a killer pot roast!"

LOL!! You are so, so right... it's fun to taunt the boys with the unrealistic expectation of living up to Edward and his dazzling, well, dazzlingness? :P hehehe...
But you're also totally right about the book series. Loved it (granted, I think I'm the ONLY one in our little group who only read each of them ONCE??) and definitely am looking forward to the movie in that I'm intrigued to see what they do with it - how it compares to the books. Obviously it won't be better than the book, or even anywhere near - you're right, too, that it looks VERY overdone. I'm not really sure what they were thinking with it, but I'm withholding further judgment until we all go see it next Friday.
<3
I haven't written a blog post about the Twighlight series :-P
I haven't actually got round to reading them yet. It's just another set of books at the end of a loooong list of to be reads.
I just wrote my twilight post today because I felt so out of the loop having not written it yet.
I too make random Edward references with my friends and my mother now insists every vampire "Is in Edward's family".
I've read of a few reviews of the movie that said the movie was actually pretty good, which surprises me because I'm keeping my expectations very low.
And I've been meaning to read the Southern Vampire Books--I didn't realize just how similar they were.
I plan to go see the movie, but am worried that I will be sadly disappointed.
I basically read every book in the Southern Vampire Series in a day because I found them so refreshing.
I picked up Twilight last week and also noted the similarities. I think I like the creativeness of the SVS better, but I haven't completed the Twilight series. We shall see...
This thing is HUGE.
My bosses even have it on their calendars that they are going to see it together on Friday.
what the...
I am convinced that every blog has a post about Twilight too. Except mine. I could be the only person that has not read it or is going to see the movie.
yeah i have definitely hopped on the twilight train a bit late but man am i in loooove. i can't help it at all.
Seriously, I feel like some kind of alien. Because I read the first book and I. DID. NOT. LIKE IT.
Let me qualify that. I did enjoy the first half. Even though I knew the premise of the book I thought the unraveling of Edward's secret was really well done. But after they got together and it was all fainting and sparkling and declarations of eternal love, I kind of wanted to vomit after awhile.
Also, Edward may be hot, but he's also kind of stalker-ish and creepy. I know, I may have to turn in my girl card now.
so i haven't posted about it or read them, but all of my friends are obsessed like the rest of the world.
i will go see the movie.
i AM obsessed with true blood though, that show is HOT.
Everyone is ALL over Twilight right now. I'm a very late adapter to it and am working my way through Eclipse now but I'm curious about the movie. I have to admit, I'm rooting more for Jacob, even though the poor guy doesn't stand a chance, lol.
I'm starting this book tomorrow. I have to admit, I am jumping on the bandwagon...lol. I am cool enough to admit it though.
That's awesome that you read them awhile ago though. I am really excited about starting. I just really want to know what is so amazing about this Edward character.
I would like to point out that I do not have a Twilight post.
thank you.
Also, this post was incredibly readable. I thought I would just read a few lines and lose interest, but I finished. Maybe I should do the dishes... I mean, good job, La!
I haven't read any of these books because I just don't think they're my thing. But everyday I'm forced to reconsider amidst everyone's madness for them!
I really need to read these books. All my students are obsessed with them. Maybe it will be my summer reading? Anyways, I AM obsessed with True Blood. Such a ridiculously good show - even if it gives me nightmares...
Colure - Yeah, we'll see what happens.
bevchen - They're worth a quick read
Jossie Posie - Haha. Awesome.
Gretchen - Hmm. Good to know it's getting good reviews!
Mandy - Same here!
EP - I want to start on SVS next. Glad to know you enjoyed them!
So@24 - Clearly you need to get on board!
LBluca77 - WHAT? You're Insane! No, really, hearing THAT is refreshing. Haha.
Katelin - It's understandable. :)
Meghan - Haha-you're the best. YES YES! He's definitely a bit stalkerish. I concur.
Alexa - I heard it was! I have yet to see it - i'm interested!
Bayjb - A friend of mine was a Jacob fan as well. After re-reading them I saw why. Dating the best friend is always better than dating the guy everyone loves. I could see why people would root for him.
Classy in Philadelphia - Ohhh, you'll learn. :)
Dan - Hahaha. Good to know you're shocked that one of my posts is readable. Thanks, Dan, THANKS. Also, how was the hockey game? ;)
nicoleantoinette - I didn't think they were my thing either, in complete honesty. They're fun to try.
Herding Cats - My students told me about them originally as well! Go figure students know of these things first.
Twilight is sitting on my night stand right now as we speak. I'm just trying to get through Chasing Harry Winston first and then it's all about me and Edward.
Sigh.
I cannot wait.
Dammit. I caved. I requested a copy from the library. There is a small waiting list, but I don't buy books anymore. So I'll just have to be a patient little lady.
P.S. I STILL need to read Water for Elephants. I've renewed it about a billion times.
My blog doesn't have a post! I'm starting to get slightly intrigued though.
Kristen - I think you might love Edward. I mean, more than your husband. Just be prepared. :)
Mermanda - Hahaha. If you want to see the film, read Twilight first. But if you want better literature, read Water for Elephants. They're both good books, but for different reasons.
Chris - I'm sure you will be after the movie comes out!
