Life of Pi - Yann MartelWhen picking up the book Life of Pi you know it's about a boy who survives a shipwreck and must live on a lifeboat with a 450-poud Bengal tiger. When starting the book you know that he survives. What you don't know until the very end is what it's truly about.
Life of Pi starts differently than one may think. For a survival man against nature sort of book, it opens with descriptions of religion, faith, pools, and zookeepers. Every small story in the beginning is important in the end. Every faith this young Indian boy, Piscine Molitor Patel studies helps him survive.
After the shipwreck, for around 280 pages, the book describes life on the sea and how Pi survives, even with the tiger. It's harrowing at parts, and interesting at others. With two narratives going on simultaneous, you learn how life for him was and how life for him is now.
I enjoyed the book quite a bit. It took me a while to get into, but the story was really engaging. All the while you cheered Pi on, and all the while you feared for him. It was really well told and interesting. I especially liked how the ending changed everything, because survival isn't the main theme of the book, far from it. It's life. It's faith. But most importantly, it's truth. What's the difference between fact versus fiction? They're both stories. It's all about what you want to believe.
And so, Life of Pi brings you a story that might have happened. It's your choice to believe if it did or didn't. In the end, it's your choice to decide what you believe in. And if you believe.

I've been wanting to read that book for a while. Now I definitely have to check it out!
Did you like it? I LOVED it! But I've also heard from people that HATED it...which made me sad. I need to reread this one very soon.
I've definitely heard very good things about it, but also not so good things. I should see if there's any way I can fit it into the reading schedule.
tmamone - I think you'd like it, I really do!
Herding - Haha - i'm so glad you pointed out that I didn't stated if I liked it or not. I did! (And I just edited the post - thanks!!) I really liked it, however I could see how people would hate it. I guess it's not for everyone.
Tom - It is definitely a love/hate kind of book. I really enjoyed it. I hope you will too.
i loved life of pi - i totally hear you on the "hard to get into it" thing - it took me awhile. ditto to herding - many of my friends thought it was a terrible read too.
I read it a few years ago, I think I liked it. I think I must read too fast because after a while I have trouble remembering what a books about.
But I do remember being confused at the end. I just want to know the truth!
