Since I neglected to write about any of the previous award shows this year, I thought I'd throw in my reactions to the Oscars. Last night I set out to watch the award show with three friends. I was the only one completely engaged the entire time, but the others chimed in with comments often. We agreed that the show, if nothing else, was amusing.
The bad:
- I know a lot of people liked the opening song and dance, but really, I thought it was just Jackman's chance to show Broadway that he needs another chance. Was Oklahoma not enough? It was funny, sure, but just okay.
- On that note, why was there a second dance number? Are Beyonce and the HSM kids that important? Did I accidentally change the channel to the Tony's?
- The montages. There were too many. They were boring. (With the exception of the comedy one where the Pineapple Express guys commented on comedies. That, along with the related cinematographer diss, was hilarious).
- It was nice that previous winners presented the four major acting awards, but it was SO TIME CONSUMING.
- I was really excited about the musical performances. I really wanted to see "Jai Ho" performed with an amazing Bollywood dance sequence (specifically featuring the little kids from the film.) Sadly, that didn't happen. The performances WERE good, but why were they all put together in yet another montage? And why, seriously, why did they have to sing on top of one another at the end?
- Dear Edward Cullen: It's okay, you can finally break out of character
- Sofia Loren should probably stop tanning.
- Not related, Adrien Brody should probably start washing his hair
The good:
- The winners. Although predictable, I was really happy with all of the winners, especially Slumdog Millionaire (for everything), Danny Boyle, Benjamin Button (for visual effects), Sean Penn, and Kate Winslet."
- The Slumdog kids. That's it.
- The Man on Wire win and speech. It made you believe that anything was possible.
- Although some thought it was unnecessary, I really liked the two Milk acceptance speeches that were about, of course, acceptance. They were nice to hear. Now if only more people heard them.
- Tina Fey was hilarious, as expected
- The technical difficulties. They were hilarious! Clearly someone backstage had their headset wired to a mic because all night you heard that person laugh. But the best part was clearly the scream "STEVE, OPEN THE CURTAIN!" at the beginning when the curtain wasn't opening. Poor Steve probably lost his job last night.
- "Dome arigato Mr. Robato"

That's ok. We'll just watch the ending dance sequence over and over until we learn the choreography and then we can do our own Jai Ho performance :D
The Oscars aren't important enough to me to be blog worthy on my own blog. But, if I were to blog about them, I'd pretty much echo everything you said here. Well done!
Why does Sean Penn always have to go overboard and make it awkward?
We couldn't have gotten an "Aloha, Mr Hand" instead?
Man on Wire was my favorite movie this year. You're right, that speech was amazing.
I didn't watch the entire thing, but I'm with you on the things I DID see. (:
I didn't see the beginning of the ceremony, but I've got no problem with extended song-and-dance numbers (sorry, I'm a theatre vet).
I loved Sean Penn's speech, not just because of what he said but because of how darn rebellious it was. I hope that people, whether the like his candor or not, can appreciate that.
I just can't take Hugh Jackman and his over-the-top charming self. Get over it - you're a goober.
I didn't watch most of it, but "dome arigato" definitely made me laugh.
I looooved the "Domo aritgato" part =)
I guess I'm old hollywood dreamy, but I really enjoyed the whole thing. The technical glitches killed me when they happened because that's who I am, but I loved the whole rest of the show!
Colure - it's so good!
Nilsa - Glad you agree!
rs27 - Hahaha! Well played.
Lindsay - I liked when he balanced the Oscar on his chin.
EP - Yay!
Tom - I love it too! The rebellious nature is fantastic.
Narm - AGREED. Thank you for bringing goober back.
andrea - That was awesome.
Kyla - I like old hollywood too, don't get me wrong! I just felt it was more suited for the Tonys. Maybe that's why I love the Tonys so. :)
Beyonce and her Booty are always important!
At least to me.
I agree with many of your gripes. Robert Pattinson needs to liven up a bit, Sophia Loren was a disaster and I didn't mind the opening sequence.
Also, I was REALLY hoping Jai Ho would have been done as it was in the movie. Definitely upset that was so short.
I love the Slumdog Millionaire. I think it was the best movie on The 81st oscars ceremony. The movie is about real life about real people and it is always popular plot.
