After we moved to Florida, we never really made egg creams. It was as if the recipe was left in our old house, entertaining the new family living there. The next time I really thought of the drink was one summer during college. In my refrigerator I had milk, chocolate syrup (I loved making chocolate milk to go with an egg sandwich every Saturday morning), and tonic water from the vodka and tonics I sometimes made. Unsure of myself, and my memory, I decided against trying it.
Last night, out of nowhere, while watching a Friends re-run, I craved the egg cream. In the kitchen, using the same mixer I used when I was ten, I made the drink. Although I wanted to stop after the milk and just make a normal chocolate milk, I kept going. All these years later, it was just as I remembered.

I want one. I'm going home to make it for lunch.
I will eat 45 of them.
I always make a point of having an egg cream during each of my visits to NYC. I also loved reading about them in the assorted books that I've read about NYC as well.
Uhhhh... where's the egg in this "egg cream"??
That sounds fantastic! I'm going to have to give the egg cream a try.
I'd never even heard of this before. Isn't it wonderful trying things from your childhood and them being just as you remembered?
rs27 - You can't have one. There's sugar in it and you're all anti-sugar now. GIVE IN TO THE TEMPTATION!
Tom - Yes! It's such a staple of NY. I thought everyone had them until I learned otherwise.
Colure - There isn't any, that's the whole point.
EP - Yes! It's weird and wonderful how you just randomly remember things.
