10 Years Later

Last night I met two of my friends at Starbucks for coffee and gossip. They're girls I've known since I was around 15 - girls who really know me. I love still having friends like them - people who've seem me go through millions of changes, who've seen each identity crisis and each return to normality. It's nice that we don't need to catch up anymore, just continue where the last conversation left off as if the gap never happened.

While hanging out, we realized that it was opening night for our friend Andrew up in NY. Andrew, another high school drama club friend, is in his first Broadway show. After years of some success (mostly in the Disney scene), he's finally made it to Broadway as Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid. We're all incredibly proud. Wanting to wish him luck, we realized that none of us had his newest phone number. And that's where Mueller came in.

In high school, Mueller was our drama teacher. Like a mother, she'd guide us through both scenes and life effortlessly. She was there to offer advice or lend a hand. She was also there to let us know when we were acting stupid. And so, like a proud mother, she was up in NY for Andrew's opening night.

Quickly calling her cell phone, we screamed jumbled phrases into the phone, hoping they came out right. Hoping she'd give him our message. Laughing, we sat back and sighed.

It says something when three friends can get together and be themselves after 10 years.
It also says something that those same three friends can call their old high school drama teacher at 9:30 p.m. and not feel weird at all about it.

Congrats to your friend for playing Eric - that is a huge accomplishment! I saw The Little Mermaid just over a year ago, and my friend and I both agreed it was really great. Everyone seems to love that play.

How exciting for your friend!

I love that the three of you can still get together and hang out and call an old teacher! That's friendship. And I find the older that I get, the more I appreciate those tried and true friends, even if we have grown apart throughout the years.
