Grad School and Blog Awards

Two exciting things to discuss on this lovely Saturday morning:

1 - I'm going to grad school! I haven't mentioned this to many people because I wasn't sure if I'd be re-admitted, but I have been. Back in 2005, I did a semester of grad school in English Education. Due to lack of funding and a strong distaste for the program (they valued learning about the history of education - which doesn't apply in any classroom - rather than the actual books we'd be teaching), I decided to work full time instead - which is how I became a teacher. Clearly, that didn't work out too well.

I've always been rather disappointed with the fact that I never finished my degree, so after strong consideration, I decided to reapply, only to a different program. So, as of a few days ago, I'm officially re-enrolled at FSU again! I'll be taking classes online, since I don't plan on moving back to Tallahassee at anytime. And rather than getting an MA in English Education, I'll be getting my MS is Library Sciences. That's right - I'm going to become a librarian. Not right away, of course, but I think it's an exciting plan for the future. I'll be able to work with books full time (I so dearly miss working in a book store) and pursue writing on the side. I haven't decided which area I'm going to specifically focus on yet, but I've narrowed it down to special collections (dealing with older documents) or YA (creating young adult literacy programs.) Both sound really fun and there are classes within my program that deal specifically with them. So, we'll see! I start August 24th - wish me luck!

2 - The 2nd Annual Book Blogger Appreciation Week has been scheduled for September 14 - 18! It's a way to showcase and recognize all blogs that devote themselves to books. Check out the website to learn more about the event - there will be prizes and awards given out all week. It's not just for book reviewers, it's for readers and authors as well.

If interested, click the link for Awards & Nominations and nominate some of your favorite book bloggers in various categories. Now, I'm not going to say vote for me, but if you so choose to (please?) I think i'll fit in around Best New Blog. Or anything else you see fits. For others you should nominate, check out my blogroll (which I really need to update), and the Book Blogs ning page.

That is awesome...congratulations! I can't think of a better place to work than in a library. The OCLS is most excellent.

I am also excited about the Blogger Appreciation Week. I've only been around since November of last year, so this is a new thing for me too. That list of nominations is a little intimidating...how to decide?

That's so terrific! You'll be a great librarian. Have you decided on school, public, or research? Either way, you have time.

Ooh, congratulations. That's such a hard choice for the specialist subject - both sound great! If I didn't enjoy translating so much I might consider becoming a librarian too.
