Unfinished Books

When at all possible, I must finish a book. I hate leaving it halfway through, still pulled by the threads of the story. But sometimes I just can't. Sometimes I lose interest and can't go back. So here's the list of books I didn't finish this year, those that I left, wanting more:
  • My Booky Wook - Russell Brand. As an actor, I really like Brand. He's crass, ridiculous and pretty hilarious. His documentary about his travels across the country to feel like Sal Paradise was brilliant (and to this day my favorite Kerouac documentary because, unlike the others that are droll, this one was vivacious and dangerous, the way Kerouac would have wanted. It got to the essence of On the Road so much clearer.) The book, however, was a bit of a let down. At first I was impressed - Brand is ridiculously smart and well spoken and the book is written in his voice and train of thought. It just got a bit repetitive and, although I knew what I was getting into, I got a bit sick of the repetition.
  • Man Walks Into a Room - Nicole Krauss. I adored Krauss's The History of Love, so certainly I'd like her first novel about a guy who loses his memory, right? Eh, not so much. I got bored of it very fast. Struggling, I got half way through and then gave up for something more interesting.
  • Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon. I know it's probably sacrilegious to list this book as unfinished, as it's so loved by many, but I just couldn't get into it. It bored me, quite frankly, and there wasn't enough plot, I suppose. I did skim to the end (considering I had to read it for school), so you may count it as finished, but I far from loved it.
Did you leave anything unfinished? Anything you just couldn't get to the last page of?

there have been a few books i didn't enjoy, but read them anyway because i also have a hard time not finishing books. but a few years ago i picked up some chicklit book about a wedding or something. i only got maybe 5 pages in before i decided i hated it and wasn't reading anymore.

You didn't like Curious Incident?? Oh man, I loved that. However, I was completely unable to finish On the Road, by Kerouac, which I'm not 100% sure is actually loved by so many people so much as people like to quote the "The only ones for me are the mad ones" part. I also was unable to finish Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which was sad because I usually like philosophical-esque books like that.

I contemplated My Booky Wook too - LOVE Russell Brand, but thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I have a confession - the Twilight books were my Big Unfinished of 2009 :S

I still need to finish "What is the What." The first 200 pages was great, now I just need to get through the next 200.

I didn't finish The Story of Edgar Sawtelle because I went to my book club meeting and found out how it ended and I couldn't bear to finish the last 50 pages!

I actually finished an entire book this year! If I listed the unfinished ones, it'd be my whole bookshelf.

But I read "Life Together" by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Twice. (no, it's not a picture book.)

I never finished Homecoming in high school and this year I put down the Forgotten Man because I didn't find it to be well written ... at all.

I did finish the Curious Incident but I don't think I was a huge fan. I thought it was well written. I thought it was really interesting the way it was written from an autistic person's POV but I didn't think it was awesome. At the same time, I am really really picky when it comes to books and often am not overly impressed by them unless they are just that good.

I finished Curious Incident, and although I found it to be interesting (because it is so DEAD on accurate from an Autistic child's POV) it left me wanting more.

i have started too many books that are just sitting on my desk waiting for me to pick back up.. and not that i don't like them, just the semester started and i haven't had time to delve back in. hopefully over winter break (which I'll have a month off) I can finish a couple of them.
