Bookshelves

This past week Samir and I did the unthinkable. After three months of living with one another, we finally combined bookshelves. Weeding out the doubles, we alphabatized everything neatly on our three cases, pausing to fit in all of Harry Potter, and him shaking his head at all of the Stephenie Meyer. Some duplicates we split in half, putting one on the shelf and the other in a "donate to the library" box, whereas others we stared at, a million memories flickering through our eyes, and without words put both copies on the shelf. They were the same book, of course, but different in so many ways. Different rushed notes scribbled in the margins, different covers from across the world, different periods of our lives. I think, in total, there were three books too close to let go a copy of: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Little Prince and High Fidelity. They each, in one way or another, mean something to us, something that doesn't need words or pictures to convey.

Wow.

For some books, it's definitely not as simple as saying "we both have this book, let's get rid of one." And, of course, you don't want to give up your own copy of High Fidelity.

But that's quite a big thing to do, but congratulations on bringing together your respective book collections!

I have to admit, this is one of the most romantic things I've ever heard of doing! Maybe only book lovers will think that, but really, that just sounds so so romantic. I can't wait to meet someone to combine my books with! :)

My boyfriend and I need another book shelf. Our books are currently competing for attention and space!

That is a big step! Almost to the point of combining checking accounts! Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) my husband is not a big reader, so I've always had the shelves to myself for the most part!

Awwww, that's such a sweet moment. I don't know how you managed. I think I have more books than my man. He has tons but never reads them. He'll start about five a year and never get through them.

Dammit, I should have posted when my girlfriend and I combined our books - another blog post lost to the wind. :-)

Congrats.

matt and i have merged books and surprisingly the only one we both had was 'the da vinci code' and we just got rid of mine because it was so torn up, haha.
