Sound Off

Today I learned that Walter Kirn, the author of Up in the Air, wasn’t invited to the Oscars. While I was greatly shocked by the fact, Samir was nonchalant. His response? “It’s been happening for years – authors are never invited.”

Which brings me to my question for you all. Do you think that’s fair?

While Samir thinks it’s okay (his stance being that it’s the movie and screenplay up for an award, not the book and author), I think it’s really…mean. If it wasn’t for Kirn’s work, Up in the Air wouldn’t be a film. He created the characters, the plot, the general idea. Sure, his version wasn’t filmed, but his version was the basis of the screenplay. I just think it would be really nice to include him (as well as every other neglected author who’s book’s movie is up for an award) in the celebration, especially considered the film is up for so many awards.

But that’s only my stance and, of course, I can see Samir’s side (even if it’s totally wrong). Maybe I feel so strongly because I’m a writer. What do you all think?

*Samir actually really likes books. He's not an author-hater, don't worry.

nope, i'm totally on your side!! there would be nothing without the original dude! they should at least have some sort of thanks ceremony or something. also, i loved that movie - made me feel soo guilty about living so far away from family.

While TECHNICALLY, they wouldn't need to have the author there, I think it would be the right thing to do...a courtesy. Unfortunately, authors to Hollywood are not sexy. (While there are bibliophiles that would throw their panties at some authors!)

I agree with you - the author should be invited.

I agree. While the movie and screenplay are up for the award, it would be a nice gesture to invite the man who thought of it all. This is disappointing.

The author should definitely be there. Period.

I tend to agree with you...why not have the author there? Seems sort of silly to leave the person out who wrote the story to begin with but I guess they only think of the people who are involved with the film.
