I cried when my iBook passed away. Cried.
This week, as everyone is aware, the iPad was released. And here's the thing - I just don't get it. Is it a computer? A phone? An MP3 player? It's not small enough for a purse, but it can't just stand on a table. I can see the functionality of it - I can see its benefits, but really...is it necessary?
A big driving force is its ebook reader. And that's where they lose me because here's the thing: I love books. I love them so much that i'd probably save my favorites before Samir if a fire should engulf our apartment [Sorry Samir]. I love turning the page, smelling the rough paper, underlining my favorite phrases (I do this), and even hugging them once the last page is closed. I love curling in bed with a paperback. I don't mind the weight when traveling; sure it might mean one less outfit, but having two unread books is important!
(Yes, I'm reading the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels. Two more to go!)
So despite my devotion, I'm giving a pass on the iPad, as well as the Kindle, Sony Reader and all other ebooks. For me, I just don't see the attraction.

I agree with you, I think the iPad has an identity crisis of sorts. Plus, the current model doesn't even have 3G! I'll keep my Kindle!
Totally agree with you. I'm anti-kindle. Give me a real book anyday!
I don't understand the iPad either. And I love all Apple products! My mom has a kindle and loves it. I'm still up in the air with that one. Not sure. I also love flipping the pages!
Oh my gosh, I am totally with you on this one. There is nothing better to me than a book. A physical book. I like turning the pages, I love the smell of older books. Everything about them is amazing. And honestly, people complain about spending all day at computers--why would I want to stare at screen to read? Plus, something tells me I can't take an e-book into a bubble bath :P
I would be an iPad if it somehow had new editions of Encyclopedia Brown. I know I could totally figure those out now.
you're going down Bugs Meany!
i'm right there with you on passing on all of the ebooks as well. i like holding a real book i just don't think i'd like to stare at a screen any longer, just not for me.
I'm the same as you with the Apple stuff, as well as eBooks. I just don't see the draw. Something about turning the pages and the smell of a new book makes me really happy, and it's not something I want to give up.
Ditto. I don't get it either. For me, it seems to have the same uses as the things you already have. It seems like a waste of money. :S
