Considering booking a trip to the Channel Islands next year? If you have relaxation in mind, I think picking one of Guernsey’s fantastic countryside hotels is a great way to go – especially if you love walking or simply want to get away from it all.
While there are several hotels to choose from, I think there are a few that really stand out from the crowd. You can check these out below.
Top hotel for families
If you’re travelling as a family, I think one of the very best countryside hotels to pick has to be Le Friquet Hotel. You’ll find it in a really convenient location midway between the pretty beaches of the west coast and St Peter’s Port, the island’s capital.
So, what exactly is it that makes this place so great for families? Well, it offers self-catering apartments – in addition to standard hotel rooms – that give parents and kids plenty of space. Plus, as these are self-catering, you can cut down on the cost of your trip by preparing your own food. Of course, this is also a bonus if any of your children are fussy eaters!
What’s more, you needn’t worry that choosing an apartment will mean that you miss out on the best of the hotel. Guests staying in this kind of accommodation are free to use all the hotel’s facilities, like its heated outdoor pool (which is open in summer) and the large patio garden.
If you would prefer to stay in a room, however, the hotel has plenty of options. Standard rooms come with twin beds, while you can also reserve double or family rooms, as well as luxurious suites that are perfect for special occasions.
Top hotel for walkers
Personally, if I was planning a holiday in Guernsey, I’d be really keen to go walking, since there are just so many lovely countryside paths to explore. If this appeals to you to, La Barbarie is a particularly good hotel to choose.
This is thanks to its proximity to the cliff-top paths of the west coast, as well as Les Ruettes Tranquilles. These are country lanes that give priority to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders – rather than vehicles – which makes them absolutely fantastic for walkers. The icing on the cake is that the staff at the hotel will also be able to advise you on the best routes to take.
You’ll find this hotel in St Martin, complete with a sun terrace, outdoor swimming pool and a cosy bar. It’s also home to a fantastic seafood restaurant, where you can treat yourself to extravagant platters of the best local catch.
A quick fun fact for you: this hotel’s name can be traced back to the 17th century, when the then owner of the country house – as it was in those days – was kidnapped by Barbary Coast pirates.
Last but not least, the Farmhouse Hotel in St Saviour is the top place to go if you fancy a little four-star luxury. What’s really great about staying here is that each of the 14 rooms has its own design, so no two are the same. This means the hotel always offers a really unique experience.
What interests me most, though, is the sound of the food. The a la carte restaurant has a fantastic reputation, but I’d also be keen to dine in the hotel’s lounge a couple of times. This promises tasty fare in a more casual, relaxed setting.
Plus, this hotel isn’t far from the island’s airport, which means you won’t have too far to travel to catch your flights to and from Guernsey – something that’ll be particularly welcome news if you’ve got your heart set on relaxing as much as possible!
