Five Less Well Known Vacation Destinations

Looking to popular destinations is not the only option when it comes to a vacation. Seeking out a lesser known place can be just as rewarding and have advantages that include more affordable costs and quieter, less crowded attractions. Some to consider include the following.

Umbria, Italy

Umbria is located in the very centre of Italy. It is a unique district in that it is the only one in the country that does not have a coastline or a border with another country. It offers plenty for tourists to enjoy though. This includes historic sites such as the Basilica di San Francesco, with its mountain-top location reached by a ride on the Funivia Colle Eletto. Other attractions in Umbria include the Gothic-style cathedral in Orvieto and a chocolate museum called Casa del Cioccolato Perugina.

Oviedo, Spain

Ovideo lies in northern Spain and there are plenty of fun things to see and do in this historic city. Tourists can relax in the beautiful Plaza del Fontan, which is a common meeting point for locals, or visit one of the many religious buildings. This includes the city’s cathedral and the Santa Maria del Naranco Church. Visitors can also relax and enjoy the sights in the central Parque de San Francisco.

Symi, Greece

One of the lesser known Greek islands to visit is Symi. The beautiful harbour in its main town, also called Symi, is well worth seeing and other landmarks include Panormitis Monastery and a nineteenth century clock tower. Symi also plays host to a summer music festival, which has many top Greek musicians playing free open-air concerts. These take place regularly between July and September and visitors can easily get tickets and travel insurance to attend these.

Ohrid, Macedonia

This city lies on Lake Ohrid and is one of the most picturesque destinations in Macedonia. Attractions that tourists can visit while there include Car Samoil’s Castle, the National Museum, and an impressive amphitheatre that hosts summer concerts. A trip on Lake Ohrid also makes for a great day out and there are some nice beaches around its shoreline to spend a few hours on the sand. Some of the best include Ljubanista, Labino, and Gradiste.

Liepaja, Latvia

Located on the Baltic coastline of Latvia, Liepaja boasts many attractions that visitors are sure to enjoy. The white sandy beaches are as good as any in Europe and are perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. Other attractions to visit include the former Russian military town of Karosta, which is now part of northern Liepaja, and the centrally-located Seaside Park. There are a number of open air markets to take in, with one of the largest being Petertirgus.

Getting off the beaten track is something that many travellers like to do. The destinations shown above are great places to visit although they aren’t all that well known when it comes to vacation ideas. If you are looking to spend time away from the crowds they are a top choice for a holiday.
