Back to School

It took me 15 minutes to pick out an outfit this morning. 15 minutes that could have been spent reading quietly outside while I waited for my boss to unlock our office. But, no, I spent them trying to decide if the vest was professional, yet friendly enough. If the skirt was a bad idea. You'd think I was dressing for a date.

But, no, I was preparing for my first photography class that I'm taking tonight with Colure. Although it's a one time class, one 3 hour lecture on how to properly utilize my camera and not just mess with the automatic setting, I still acted as if it were like any other first day.

As a child, although I enjoyed swimming, biking and running, I really enjoyed back to school shopping. As sadistic as it sounds, I loved going with my mom to purchase new multi-colored notebooks, Lisa Frank folders, 3-ring binders and sparkling pens. I specifically loved the pens. Every year my mom would allow me to buy a new set, any set I wanted. At first I leaned towards the more colorful ones, the pinks and purples and greens, but later on I settled for the blues, the blacks as many people do. The excitement of back to school shopping didn't end after puberty, it kept going. Every year, I'd be the person who packed my black backpack the night before with each new notebook perfectly labeled and every pencil sharpened to the tip. I didn't love school, I didn't get excited by quizes and tests, but I loved stationary and the prospects that come from starting over.

A new school year means a new beginning. I shed the embarrassments of the previous year in the swimming pool, on the front lawn, driving around town. A fresh start, a new piece of paper. I was always excited the night before the first day. Much like waiting for Santa, I never knew what would happen next. Would my friends be in my class? Could we pass notes? Would my teachers be okay? Are the subjects interesting? Would THAT GUY say hello? That Guy, you know, the Guy everyone gets up for in the morning. The Guy that you wear your best shirt for, the Guy who makes your stomach drop just by glancing in your direction. I went through many That Guys, just as I went through many school supplies. But much like the well used pens, they were always lost, borrowed by someone else, and never returned.

I don't expect to have a Guy in my photography class (I am quite content with Samir), but I am excited to see what it will be like. Will I learn how to use the RAW setting? Will I finally fully understand the apperture? So I dressed this morning as a professional for work, but as someone willing to be creative for later on. I'm not as excited as I used to be for class, I didn't stay up late sharpening pencils and labeling notebooks, but I did pick out a specific pen. I'm still convinced that a new pen could make anything special.

Oh man, don't get me started on the school supply shopping trip. That was like, my favorite day of the year. My parents figured that out and started getting me Staples gift cards for Christmas so I could relive the magic (as it were). Yeah, to this day, nothing makes me happier than new pens and a stack of Post-its.

My back to school euphoria usually lasts until 3 weeks of school LOL. But it sure is a good feeling.

How fun! I was always a big fan of back to school shopping, packing my bag perfectly and wearing an awesome new outfit on the first day. (It all fell apart after that, but hey, I made a good first impression.)

I cannot wait to hear about your photography class! I hope it's amazing!

I love new stationary, but I hated school. And being from the land of school uniforms there was no putting on our favourite shirt to try and impress a guy either.

Hope you had fun at photography class!

aw I totally loved pouring over the "back to school" flyers we'd get in the paper. Alas, my mom was never one to purchase us any new supplies when the schools would give us our own notebooks and crapy pencils, but as soon as I was old enough I always saved up my summer money to buy new supplies each September.

I STILL love stationery and opening a brand new notebook.

I love that we BOTH showed up in our vests. Clearly, vests = professional but creative ;) haha. We should do another photography class soon! Maybe one of the ones where you actually do some photography ;) haha.
