Top Five Friday - Episode Five

Since Top Five Friday has conquered quotes, movies, TV shows and games, clearly it was time for music. Now, i'm far from a music aficionado. My taste went from Disney to Madonna to Beck to Broadway to The Ataris to Saves the Day to Belle and Sebastian. I was everywhere and always at the wrong time. I'm much better with books. Anyway, this week doesn't just focus on songs, it focuses on the videoes. That's right, this week's topic is Top Five Music Videos. The videos are in no specific order and I didn't embed them due to formatting. But I did include links!

As always, check out Samir and RS27's lists as well. It's great to see how we all differ in taste.

Top Five Music Videos

1. Weezer - "Keep Fishing"
Weezer + Muppets + Hilarity = Awesome. When this came out, I was convinced that the world could not get better. For me, it was almost as life changing as the film The Muppet Family Christmas (Muppets, Seasame Street AND Fraggle Rock? I almost died). It was like they made the music video for me. As a long time fan of Weezer and their lead singer (yes, I admittedly had a thing for Rivers Cuomo at one time - it was the glasses), it was amazing to see them interact with my favorite childhood characters. Kermit on the mic, Animal on the drums, penguins flipping - amazing. Best of all, the song is incredibly catchy. The rest of the album wasn't that great (neither was that song on the album - it was slower for some reason), but the music video made up for it all. Even now it makes me smile. [Watch]

2. Eve Six - "Here's to the Night"
This is by far the most simple, yet relatable music videos. When it came out I watched it over and over again because it felt like I was part of it. It was a party, just like any other party, at a house, just like any other house, with a group of friends. It reminded me so much of fun nights with my friends, videotaping the craziness that ensued. It didn't hurt that I really enjoyed the song as well. It had a very "cease the moment, enjoy your friends," kind of feel. Years later a group of friends and I had a similar party. It was one of the last nights we would all be in Tallahassee together so we brought out Sarah's video camera and panned the room, zooming in to the moment. I kept having visions of the music video. I still have the tape. [Watch]

3. Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight Tonight"
When this song came out, I was still learning about MTV and music that wasn't handed down from my parents. The song instantly struck me as epic, exciting. The music video had me captivated. The old stock footage feel, the paper mache look, the fairy tale expeirence -all of it. It was incredibly creative. I love that it took the 1920's voyage theme and made it into something completely different. By far one of the neatest music videos around. [Watch]

4. Stars - "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead"
I wholeheartedly admit that I chose this video partially because it's one of my favorite songs (not all time favorite - that award goes to "Piano Man.") I love the simplicity of this video. It's the minimilism that makes it so engaging - you're forced to listen to the words, understand the lyrics. The overall look is beautiful, with the ice and the instruments. It's all very Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Watch it, you'll understand. [Watch]

5. Michael Jackson - "Thriller"
Now, this is probably the most well known, well liked music videos of all time. It's slightly obvious for me to put it on my list - but I COULDN'T RESIST. It's my list, right? I can't say much about this music video other than I love it, I know most of the dance, and I used to act it out as a child. Watch it to remind you of Jackson's awesome days. [Watch]

[Honorable Mentions: Billy Joel - We Didn't Start the Fire (I really like his music, it's bad) Justice - D.A.N.C.E., White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl, R Kelly - Trapped in the Closet (mostly for Samir)]

Don't forget to check out Samir and RS27's picks!

I definitely and wholeheartedly agree about the "Keep Fishin'" video. I remember the first time I saw it, I was smiling and laughing the whole time. I mean, you can't really go wrong with the Muppets in any situation.
